LGA-DCA shuttle
Anyone know if the LGA-DCA shuttles (Delta and US Air, I think) ever completely fill, or if walk-up tickets are always available? Thanks!

Re: LGA-DCA shuttle
tds,
I can only speak for my side of the Shuttle war, but the BOS-LGA-DCA Shuttles were designed for the 'walk-up' business traveller. There are almost always seats available at the last minute (though they are pricey at around $375 one way). Our DCA Shuttle is contracted out to a E170 operator (BOS is still maniline on the A319) but it is still a good product. It is open seating with free beer/wine and snacks (brand X uses assigned seating). It leaves every hour on the half hour and the heavier loads are generally from 0630-0930 and 1530-1830. Weekends the schedule goes down to every two hours. As you probably know, our LGA Shuttle operations are out of the relative peace and quiet of the Marine Air Terminal.
Let me know if you have any questions or want me to look up a specific load.

Superb - thank you, DP!
Thanks for the offer, but no specific flight in mind; I have some work coming up in Manhattan and need to know that I can get back to DC at very short notice if required (Ms. tds looking awfully chubby lately). In the circumstances, I'll be willing to eat the $400...

Thanks J. I am a big fan of rail, and it's certainly my usual choice on this route. Acela will be my backup if there are thunderstorms screwing up the NE, but my last NYP-WAS took seven hours. I still use it, and perhaps my experience is atypical, but I've been delayed too often to trust it when time is critical.

Re: LGA-DCA shuttle
I agree about rail : sadly too unreliable. I actually drive more these days (and on other occasional routes too, as the whole flying experience has become mostly pretty miserable), but I know this wouldn't suit everyone.
On the flight side, on the basis of 3-4 trips this year, there are usually a few spare seats, but the morning rush-hour flights are by far the most crowded. There are also a few other options via the other airports, of course.

Thanks. I did the 6am US (sorry, DP...) shuttle every week for much of 2009, but almost never at any other times and less often in the LGA-DCA direction - hence my ignorance.
Do you drive all the way in to Manhattan, David? How long does it take?

I usually allow 4 1/2 to 5 hours (some hot shots claim 4 hours), plus any stopping time. I myself usually drive to and sleep in Brooklyn and take taxis or subways from there.Do you drive all the way in to Manhattan, David? How long does it take?
Driving is not for everyone, but for me advantages include : ability to go when I choose, no security nonsense, I can take as much or as little as I want, no boorish fellow passengers, air conditioned privacy. I admit though that a roundtrip same day is not a good idea.
Like many Americans, I have also started to make more domestic trips by car this past couple of years, eg. Washington to Chicago, Nashville and Columbus, Ohio. They work, more or less, and are a welcome change from decades of aviation culture.

Thank you, David. Brooklyn is probably what I'd end up doing too. Driving in Manhattan does not appeal!

Nope only three have left we still have three of the buggers here, I have seen a picture of ex VH-ZHA in full Delta colours though looks quite good.

I don't find driving in Manhattan too bad, at least compared with Rome, Damascus or Kabul, say. The problem with driving in Manhattan is not driving, as such, but parking.Thank you, David. Brooklyn is probably what I'd end up doing too. Driving in Manhattan does not appeal!

My confidence is not buoyed by those comparisons. Although I wouldn't be surprised to find Kabul's roads in better condition than the District's.

As bad as they sometimes are, DC roads are generally better than those in the New York area.
The thing about Afghan roads - the new ones anyway - is that they are excellent when completed, but they fall apart after about a week and a half. They are of very poor quality and are jerry-built, largely due to multiple "facilitation payments", after which there is little money left over for actual construction.
