Effort to Save Ike's Constellation

Postby J » Mon Jan 30, 2017 9:37 pm

Here is a video about the first Air Force One that may be of interest.

And here is a later video from last year showing the plane after a ferry flight from AZ for restoration by Dynamic Aviation in Virginia.
One of the engines looks like it is consuming a lot of oil.

Well... an engine that's consuming oil is an engine that's running... and that's better than one that's not!

If there is no oil UNDER a radial engine, that can only be because there is no oil IN the radial engine.

Quite an undertaking, a restoration like that. Consider that it took Lufthansa (with all their resources) three airplanes to build one.

And once you've restored it, you have to maintain it!

I remember seeing an interview with someone from a group that had restored a WWII bomber - I think it was the Commemorative Air Force and the B-17. The guy said that altogether it cost about $20,000 an hour to operate the aircraft... ouch!

If he is exaggerating, it's not by much. These are expensive toys.
