Today the industry lost arguably the best First Officer it ever had.

Man, I'm dense.

Thought you had quit to make similar $ to Putt-4-Parr.

Instead...you are now like ITS, Dummy Pilot, and Boeing Bobby and have to learn how to use your left hand to not only fly the cheap composite cracker box, but more importantly to steer it into parking places..

Wow, so may stripes!!! Congratulations for the achievement.

To quick somehow related question.

Is it correct that typically (often? sometimes? seldom?) FOs have the option to make progress in their careers by moving to captain in the same type or to FO in a higher type? If yes, I wonder what are the pros and cons of each.

Once you are captain, do pilots typically move as captain when are "promoted" to a bigger type? Or they need to be FOs in the new type first?

I would like to have a better understanding of how the pilot career progress work, just out of curiosity of course.

In the US, a pilot can hold any seat in any type that his seniority allows. That is to say, if he/she is senior enough, there is nothing that says they can't go from MD-80 F/O to 777 CA without any intermediate stops, provided there are openings for the latter.

But my question was more regarding how things work (typically), what a pilot can expect in terms of career growth, not what is legally admissible.

For the first question, I guess that, typically, you will have a good bunch of MD-80 CA and 777 FO that will want this 777 CA seat and will have priority over an MD-80 F/O. So what are the pros, cons, and chances to move left on the MD-80 vs moving up on the right seat?

For the second question (say a MD-90 CA moving to a 777), do airlines (not regulators) typically request that a captain in smaller type has some say few hundreds of hours on the new bigger type before acting as the captain/PIC on that type? (I actually think the answer to that question is "no", but that's just a guess)

If those MD-80 CAs and 777 FOs are junior to our MD-80 FO, they have zero priority over him, regardless of what they want. That was kind of my point.

I'm not aware of such "requests" by airlines, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Les Stature actually wrote a pretty decent article about seniority a few years back, but I couldn't find it.
