Boeing 757 cockpit to land at EdVenture in Columbia
COLUMBIA, SC —

Columbia children’s museum, EdVenture, is getting a new look on the outside, thanks to a grant from NASA and the new exhibit “Flight.”

A Boeing 757 cockpit will be installed on the second-story outside wall overlooking the Columbia Canal, the museum announced.

Friday morning the cockpit will be hoisted into place with a crane and attached to the building with 20-foot steel beams in advance of the exhibit’s mid-July opening.

When the exhibit is complete, children will be able to sit in the pilot’s seat and look out of the cockpit, test their own wings in a windtunnel and fly in flight simulators.

Boeing has three major South Carolina facilities, including a final assembly facility for the 787 Dreamliner and a plant that fabricates, assembles and installs systems for rear fuselage sections of the Boeing 787.

I wish there were more in-tact airplanes on display where you could sit in the cockpit.

Tons upon tons of whole aircraft are on display, but it's kind of rare to get in the cockpit.

The 727 at Chicago is very cool, but conversely, it's somewhat cut up and don't think you actually work controls.

They have a DC-9 in VA...same deal- somewhat cut up AND while you can sit and work knobs and yokes, I don't think they are connected.

At the Smithsonian at Dulles- there's a whole Cessna 150/2 you can sit in...but no airliner.

One other cool display was a simulated Wright flier with 'realistic, Wright controls. Pretty dang challenging to fly...crazy under powered.

Mr. 'I'd-never-do-a-relentless-pull-up' (and-AWARE-of-phugoids-but-not-as-much-as-Gabriel) could not_stay aloft!
