In a flip of an Airbus twin-aisle customer, Hawaiian Airlines announced an agreement Tuesday to buy 10 787-9 Dreamliners for $2.82 billion at current list prices.

Hawaiian also has purchase rights for 10 additional 787s.

The Honolulu-based airline is a major operator of the Airbus A330, using the widebody airplane to fly medium- to long-haul flights to and from Asia and North America. Hawaiian also was the only customer of the A330-800neo, a re-engined version of the airplane designed to be a Dreamliner rival.

Hawaiian Airlines leaders said they conducted an extensive evaluation of future fleet needs before deciding to cancel the A330-800neo order in favor of going with the 787 Dreamliner. They described the 787 as a terrific choice for the airline's long-haul routes and key to its successful growth in Asia.

"The Dreamliner's operational efficiency and superior guest experience make it the best aircraft for modernizing our fleet in 2021 and beyond," said Peter Ingram, president and CEO of Hawaiian Airlines. "Its expanded seat capacity and extended range will allow us to expand within our current route network and offer new destinations in the Asia-Pacific region."

Boeing’s sales team said its competitive advantage was enhanced by Boeing Global Services. Hawaiian will use a number of new aircraft-transition support services offered by Global Services, including Training and Initial Provisioning to ensure a successful, on-time entry into service.

When the deal is finalized, it will mark Hawaiian’s first direct order with Boeing in nearly two decades.

“We are delighted to welcome Hawaiian Airlines to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family,” said Kevin McAllister, president and CEO of Commercial Airplanes. “We understand a big part of their growth strategy is flying airplanes with low operating costs, high reliability and superior fuel efficiency. The 787 meets every one of those requirements.”

Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, called it “a great win for the entire Boeing team. It shows that we are tough to beat when we come together to present the best value to our customers.”

Mounir cautioned that the win will make competition between Boeing and its chief rival more intense, requiring Boeing to maintain a sharp focus.

“We are going to have to step up our game because as we have won a significant number of widebody airplane orders, Airbus is going to become even more aggressive in their pricing,” Mounir said. “It means that we have to continue to address our costs, quality and reliability and bring to bear every element of our enterprise.”

I had not heard of the A330 neo. I thought that the A350 was the successor of both the A330 and A340.
Actually, the A350 was originally going to be an A330 with new engines and aerodynamic features (a sort of A330 new if you will), and after strong negative feedback from prospective customers they went for a greater redesign and renamed it A350 XWB (eXtra Wide Body).

Qantas to pick planemaker via contest to replace ageing A330 fleet

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Qantas Airways Ltd plans to run a competition between aircraft manufacturers to replace its ageing fleet of 28 Airbus SE A330 planes in the next 12 to 18 months, its chief financial officer said on Thursday.

She did not say what models would be considered as a replacement, though most airlines have looked at the A330neo and A350 models from Airbus and rival Boeing Co 787 and any deal would be worth multiple billions of dollars based on list prices.

Qantas has three 787s already manufactured by Boeing that are in storage in the United States because of the planemaker's delivery issues and are expected to arrive in May and June 2023 , the airline's chief executive Alan Joyce said.

The airline also in May placed an order for 12 A350s capable of the world's longest commercial flights from Sydney to London.
