According to Kim, 747s need a monthly software update via a “floppy disk drive”...

Holy inflation, Batman! When I worked at a computer store back in the mid '80's, I think we were buying 5-1/4" drives for 9 bucks each, quantity 20.

Shouldn’t the floppy drive have a guarded load/eject lever?

It's an A vs. B thing. A's floppy drives are eject-by-wire and you can't eject a disk in a way that would damage it. B's floppy drives assume that the pilot knows what they're doing.
Er. That's Apple.

And we now have non-functional auto-ejects because of cheap-composite gears delaminating after 30 years...It's an A vs. B thing. A's floppy drives are eject-by-wire and you can't eject a disk in a way that would damage it. B's floppy drives assume that the pilot knows what they're doing.

This (+ a distrust of engineers) is EXACTLY why we have all the parlour talk about composite Airbae, and the tails/rudders that should not be used (and ironingly were not adequately used by Captain Epaulet GoPro.)And we now have non-functional auto-ejects because of cheap-composite gears delaminating after 30 years...
