Back to the Past?

The sharply increased activities of Russia's air force and navy off the Norwegian coast has triggered a review of the roles and missions of the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF).

This week, the service's officers school in Trondheim is hosting an Air Power Seminar titled "Back to the Past?"

The central theme is whether Norway made the right choice, some eight years ago, to base its air force planning on expeditionary capabilities in support of crisis response operations in far-away places, rather than concentrating on air policing and air defense of its national territory at home.

At least three of the speakers are lecturing the audience on military and strategic developments in Russia.

The seminar comes at a time when Norway is preparing for its next multi-year defense plan as well as when it has to make a decision on whether to replace its Lockheed Martin F-16s with F-35A Lightning IIs from the same company or with Saab's Future Gripen variant.
Sincere condolences to all Norwegians! I guess you will need some aquevit to get over this.
