"The Committee staff encountered major difficulties in attempting to determine the answer to what might ordinarily seem like an obvious question: How many Ospreys does the Marine Corps have and what is their flight status? The Defense Department seemed to have serious difficulty in assembling this information.

I actually wasn't aware until very recently that there were V-22s out in service in the fleet. Now they've misplaced 40 of them? Or is it just that the Navy doesn't want to publicize details on their expeditionary stuff?

Troubling, but its from a site that definately has an axe to grind about the Osprey - this may be just one side to the story. PurduePilot, there has been an operational deployment in Iraq, and one about to start in Afg. One of the things reported from the Iraqi deployment was that they were replacing powerplants three times faster than predicted due to the fine sand. Maybe some of those airframes were stripped of those critical spares to keep the operational deployment going? Still doesn't explain why there aren't at least the bare airframes sitting around somewhere.
