Indian Air Show a/c Crahes Into Populated Area

Postby rattler » Wed Mar 03, 2010 2:39 pm

Looks an Indian Navy jockey lost it during an airshow, the 2 pilots dead, unknown # of injured on the ground. R.I.P. both ...

Type unconfirmed, but from the vid it seems to be a Kiran, given the importance of the show I would not be surprised to see a major navy team involved, probably "Sagar Pawan". A friend of mine who has seen another vid I cannot locate claims on the net there was contact of #4 (trailing) with #3.

The BBC provided vid is inconlcusive as nothing strange can be viewed, I guess more amateur vids will be coming up soon.

The comments of the Indian TImes reporter are the normal stuff, do not really make sense (AFAIK one initiated ejection sequence from whatever position triggers the other in modern a/c? "Entangled"? This must be exterior I guess...?) , even if he was an eye witness:
A Times of India journalist, Kingshuk Nag, witnessed the crash.

He told the BBC that the plane "went down in a manoeuvre, but could not come up".

"One pilot tried to eject but got entangled with wires and died. The other died in the crash," he said.

Sincere condolences to all Norwegians! I guess you will need some aquevit to get over this.

New:

The Navy has a fleet a 20 Kiran aircraft -12 Mk-I and eight Mk II aircrafts.

In the wake of Wednesday’s aircrash in Hyderabad, the Indian Navy has grounded its entire fleet of Kiran aircraft.

The Navy has a fleet a 20 Kiran aircraft -12 Mk-I and eight Mk II aircrafts - which are based in Goa. “As per the standard operating procedure, the aircraft will not fly till the time they are cleared by the Board of Inquiry (BOI) looking into today's mishap”, Navy officials said here.

They added that if the probe team found no problems with the aircraft, the fleet would be airborne soon. A Kiran Mk II aircraft of Navy's Goa-based Sagar Pawan Aerobatic Team (SPAT) today crashed in Hyderabad while performing at the India Aviation airshow there.

Navy officials added that one civilian and two pilots - Commander S K Maurya and Lt Commander Rahul Nair - were killed in the accident.
