P-8A aids in rescue of three men stranded on remote island

Search and rescue operations among duties of modified 737-800

A U.S. Navy P-8A aircraft, a military derivative of the Next-Generation 737-800, was instrumental in the rescue of three sailors who were stranded for three days on a remote and uninhabited island in the South Pacific earlier this month.

According to media reports, the sailors went missing April 5 after their 19-foot (5.8-meter) skiff was capsized by a large wave. They swam for two hours before finding the tiny island of Fanadik, about 2,600 miles (4,200 kilometers) southwest of Hawaii.

Three days later, a Navy P-8A crew operating out of Misawa Air Base in Japan spotted the sailors’ "help" sign — made of palm fronds on the beach — and directed rescuers to their location.

Imagine the terror on those poor guys, knowing the plane that had just seen them would surely crash after the first pull-up....

I like how ATC calls these out as P-8s rather than 737s as in "XXX, traffic at 2 o'clock, southwest bound, a Navy P-8 at FL360". Why not just say "a grey 737"?

Cuz its all about procedures... sometimes to the detriment of fundamental concepts (including that smaller 2 engine Boeing jetliner might be kind of similar between civilian and military versions).

A Russian MiG-31 fighter intercepted a P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft of the Norwegian Air Force over the Barents Sea, the Russian Defence Ministry said.

"To identify the air target and prevent violation of the State Border of the Russian Federation, a MiG-31 aircraft was scrambled. The crew of the Russian fighter identified the air target as a basic patrol aircraft R-8A Poseidon of the Norwegian Air Force,” the defence department said in a statement.

The Ministry said that the foreign aircraft made a U-turn and did not violate the Russian border. The Russian fighter carried out its mission in strict accordance with international rules.

The MiG-31 is a supersonic interceptor aircraft developed by the Mikoyan design bureau. The MiG-31 is one of the fastest combat jets in the world. The Russian Defence Ministry expects the MiG-31 to remain in service until at least 2030.

To be fair, does the PFOHCOM specifically state that the aircraft is not amphibious?

The plane clearly says "NAVY". So all is good.
