The Telegraph..."Messy Ending"
BBC Video Magazine
This only caght my eye because of my time as an exchange officer with teh Nimrods at Kinloss. It's sad to see, but inevitable. Unfortunately, their are many in the MOD who have clung to the obsolete idea that Britain is still a military powerhouse with a vibrant aviation industry. It's caused them on many occasions to waste money on "Buy and Build" British projects when more efficient and affordable options are available...See this:

What's a few billion pounds of tax payer's money between military-industrial-complex friends?

Ah that explains it, 4 billion pounds later and they cant even insulate a fuel pipe. Smashing.(NewsCore) - LONDON -- The fleet of nine UK Nimrod spy planes scrapped at a cost of £4 billion ($6.35 billion) before they had even entered service had the same design fault blamed for the downing of a plane in 2006 with the loss of 14 lives, a British Ministry of Defence report showed.
Confidential reports seen by The (London) Sunday Times show safety tests conducted last year on the first new batch of Nimrod planes found "several hundred design non-compliances."
Among them were problems opening and closing the bomb bay doors, failures of the landing gear, overheating engines, limitations operating in icy conditions and concerns that "a single bird strike" could disable the plane's controls.
But the most serious fault involved a still unresolved design flaw over the proximity of a hot air pipe to an uninsulated fuel line -- the same fault widely blamed for an explosion on board a Nimrod XV230 on Sept. 2, 2006, near Kandahar airfield in Afghanistan.

Not that the MR versions were particularly pretty, but the AEW version has to be one of the ugliest things ever to take to the skies.

Now that the Nimrods have been retired, perhaps they could be converted into passenger airliners.

Yes, seeing as they now resemble how the original Comets ended up...Now that the Nimrods have been retired, perhaps they could be converted into passenger airliners.
