Airline pilots charged with intoxication; One accused of mooning Alcoa Highway traffic in Friday incident

Two airline pilots were arrested after an incident Friday on Alcoa Highway during which one of the men pulled his shorts down and mooned northbound traffic, according to an Alcoa police report.

Officers responded to a call of an intoxicated subject at El Sazon Mexicano Restaurant, 2650 Alcoa Highway, Alcoa, at 6:31 p.m. Officers received information en route that one of the men became irate with the restaurant's manager after employees refused to serve him more alcoholic drinks, according to the report. The subject also allegedly attempted to start a physical confrontation with management employees.

While approaching the general area, an officer observed Jeffrey Leon Saltis, 43, Pittsburgh, Pa., pulling his shorts down and mooning northbound traffic. Officers also noticed another male subject, later identified as Michael Cody Etzel, 25, Richmond, Va., walking with a female in front of Applebee's. The female was attempting to take pictures of the male subject showing his buttocks to the public, according to the report.

Saltis told officers he was a pilot with United Express, according to the report.

Bill Mishk, a spokesperson for Trans States Airlines, which is affiliated with United Express, said the company can confirm they received notification that two employees were detained by local authorities Friday. Mishk, however, could not for reasons of confidentiality, identify these employees, he said.

The employees were pilots, and they were moved immediately from flight status, said Mishk. Trans States Airlines is currently investigating the matter, he said.

Officers reported both men had a strong odor of an intoxicant upon their persons.

Saltis told officers he was going back to his hotel, and he became "irate and verbally abusive with officers," the report states.

Saltis told officers he had an early morning flight, and he hoped the officers were happy because "50 people's flight would be delayed because of (Officer Dustin Cook, the arresting officer)," according to the report.

"In the interest of public safety, Officer Devore and I contacted United (Express) and airport police to inform them of the situation," said Cook.

Saltis was charged with public intoxication and indecent exposure. Etzel was charged with public intoxication. Both men were free on bonds pending a 1:30 p.m. Oct. 6 hearing in Blount County General Sessions Court.

At first I thought due to flyturds erratic behavior he could not be a RJ executive assistant. Now it appears that the realities for RJ pilots may suit him quite well.

Not that Flyboy can't speak for himself, but in RJ pilots' defense, they aren't the only pilots who can't seem to keep their clothes on as this story from several years ago reminds us:

Southwest Airlines has fired two pilots for allegedly turning their cockpit
into a clothing-optional playpen.

The pilot and co-pilot - both men - were dismissed for allegedly taking off
all or most of their clothes in the cockpit of their aircraft.

"Southwest Airlines conducted a thorough investigation and terminated the
two pilots involved for inappropriate conduct," says spokeswoman Ginger
Hardage, who would not elaborate. Southwest "will not tolerate any
inappropriate or offensive behavior."

While the incident occurred on a Boeing 737 in flight, there's no
implication that safety was breeched. And a Federal Aviation Administration
spokesman says there's no specific prohibition against flying naked.
"I'm not aware there are any regulations on the type of clothing, so there's
most likely none on (wearing) no clothing at all," spokesman Les Dorr says.
There are rules against behavior that distracts crewmembers during vital
phases of flight, which is just about anything below 10,000 feet, Dorr
notes.

Leaked video captures disturbing fight between Republic Airways employees

Violent security footage leaked online this week shows a Republic Airways pilot and another employee fighting on a jet bridge at Denver International Airport last month.

The disturbing video opens with a male pilot walking up to a female co-worker and appearing to spit on her. She responds by slapping him in the face, and the pilot begins to punch her in the stomach and face multiple times.

The employees have since been terminated, according to the airline.The security footage, obtained by the website FlyerTalk, is now at the center of a police investigation.

The violent incident took place during a layover on Sept. 14, according to the Denver Police Department.

A spokesperson for Republic Airways told ABC News on Tuesday that there were no passengers on the aircraft at the time.

"We are aware of a situation that occurred last month involving two of our employees," the spokesperson said. "We investigated this matter and took appropriate action consistent with our belief that such behavior is unacceptable."


The employees -- identified as William Thomas, 36, and Marisha Sporer, 29 -- were arrested and charged with assault and disturbing the peace, which are municipal offenses.

The two had been involved in an intimate relationship since November, according to a probable cause statement, but things went sour when Sporer saw something she didn’t like on Thomas' cellphone.


"They both agreed to break up so Thomas went onto the plane and sat in the cock-pit and Sporer went to the gate," according to a probable cause affidavit. "Sporer became angry and went onto the plane to confront Thomas. Sporer grabbed Thomas by the neck tie and slapped him in the face with an open hand three times. Thomas retaliated by grabbing Sporer and striking her in the ribs with a closed fist."

They are both scheduled to appear in court next week.

While we won't know this couple's (former) private proclivities in the bedroom, one might note that since the assault occurred in the jetway, we might say, "defecating where one eats is not advisable."
