What's going on with this diversion?

[Parlor Mode]
They are coming in normally towards the airport.
Weather or something mecahnical happens or something happens at the airport.
Thus the big sweeping turn north and west to the holding fix....
They get to the fix...They do the goofy little northerly tear drop to reverse the hold to be cockwise. (not an official reversal- but....)
Weather finally clears or the problem is resolved/whatever- thus they cut the last loop short and head on in.
A relatively normal hold? (Altough I'd assume it's a bit abnormal to hold at all for Colorado springs)

Re: What's going on with this diversion?
In what way? Looks like a pretty typical hold entry to me...
Re: What's going on with this diversion?
No 3WE, their planned destination was DEN, not COS. Hence the word "diversion".

(Bold is mine)Very strange hold.
Thus my answer.
Better yet, think about it for a moment and tell me why my explanaion is not still valid- a mechanical problem to investigate or something at the destination airport resulting in a hold.

Found out, DEN was closed to incoming traffic for over an hour this morning due to fog, had quite a few diversions into COS, types usually never seen here except for when Ft. Carson is deploying.

i wonder if you could flightaware any incoming traffic into DEN for that time period and see what other diversions looked like.Found out, DEN was closed to incoming traffic for over an hour this morning due to fog, had quite a few diversions into COS, types usually never seen here except for when Ft. Yes, upon detailed review, you have provided zero information to this thread.attention to detail.
And, to answer your question above, perhaps you could try going to Flightaware, typing KDEN into it and reviewing the flight histories during the relevant period.

Re: What's going on with this diversion?
Denver has two parallal arrivals coming in from each corner. The paths are about 15-20 miles apart. I wonder if ATC was told to slow the arrivals so they gave the west heading and then the door was shut. If the published holding patterns for the more southernly arrival for the SE gate (QUAIL SIX) were full, ATC may have parked them on the DANDD FIVE.
You're not a Freight Dawg unless you've shot the ILS to 23L at KYIP in a transport category aircraft no longer used in passenger service. You're OG if it had a tailwheel or BMEP gauges.

What's so weird about that hold?
Looks a pretty common hold entry to me as well, the reason you MAY see a smaller race track pattern is the aircraft may have been descended in the hold.

Re: What's going on with this diversion?
My assumption was that the one smaller track was their first trip through the hold and they were still getting the wind correction, though that would only really apply if they were hand-flying it and not using a FMS to plot the holding pattern. What's so weird about that hold?

Re: What's going on with this diversion?
My opinion is that if I was a passenger on that airplane I would be scared.
Lots of circlings and stuff, fuel emptying, so, as an educated passenger, I would ask the steward (ess) to contact the pilot to tell him that the airplane's (flaps and slats) were not configured correctly, and after a negative answer, ram into the pilots cabin, take control, and land safely the airplane with all passengers clapping at my heroism due to my MSFS lessons.
