Wasn't Kenyan 737 the first 700 loss?

Kenyan (YL301) was a -800.

I see a total of seven -800s and one -600 out of service in the records.

I suspect its at the pilots' discretion, but what guidelines/rules apply to the decision to go around or not after a windshear alert on finals?

It all depends on the pilot, situation, altitude, spool up time, fuel situtation, ect... There are always W/S alert in Hong Kong for lateral W/S.

Every one of these passengers are very lucky they were on a :) BOEING :) instead of an airplane that would have cracked open like a cheap composite crackerbox.

You suspect correctly with respect to a windshear alert. A windshear warning, however, is a mandatory go-around.

You sure weren't going to pick up much speed on that emergency slide. Looks like something from a kid's birthday party.

A lot of newspapers (in Spanish) are saying that the airplane was hit by lightning, and that this was the problem. Also, they say that the lightning broke the airplane in 2 parts.

What is the posibility of this happening? I just don't buy the idea.

Some of this BS news (in Spanish):

http://www.elheraldo.hn/Mundo/Ediciones ... pe-de-rayo

Can lightning brake an aircraft in 2 parts?

If I have to put money on this, I would bet for the microburst.
Just another cast away from AD.com that reached AD.info island.

That is a warning. When the PFD flashes Windshear in amber with Bitchin' Betty (in our case Bitchin' Bob) staying quiet, that is an alert (or in our case caution).

reasonable
and that this was the problem
not reasonable
. Also, they say that the lightning broke the airplane in 2 parts.
Preposterous.
What is the posibility of this happening?
Nil
I just don't buy the idea.
Good, because it's about as valuable as a pet rock.
Can lightning brake an aircraft in 2 parts?
No. It can't break it, either.
If I have to put money on this, I would bet for the microburst.
That's a better investment than the pet rock, anyway.
