Wife bying car.

Postby Ancient Mariner » Tue May 08, 2012 8:26 pm

Wife just ordered a Magnetic Brown Metallic, 170 hp turbo diesel Skoda Superb estate car, Laurin & Clement Edition with every option boxed ticked as well. Oh well, happy me.

My only input was that I wanted the 170hp stick shift, not the 140DSG version. Apart from that, it was all her decisions.

from my experience, Skoda is a very nice choice, our Fabia is coming up on 7 years, been very happy with it. No major faults, ignition coils needed changing two months ago, but that is about it.

Skoda is part of the Volkswagen group, essentially the Superb is a cheap and ver well equipped Passat

Much as I can admire the DSG - (The ex has an EOS fitted with one) I have heard issues with them dying - expensively and prematurely.

Don't know about cheap. USD 94.752/GBP 58.666. :o
The Superb is quite a bit larger than the Passat, 633 litres of booth space and limo sized rear seat. They even include a Lounge Step removable carpet for those short of stature to rest their feet on. Only other time I had that was in a streched MB560 limo in Hong Kong being taken from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel to Kai Tak.

Here's a few FiftGear videos for you. Enjoy!

Since we could not have the 4x4/170Hp/DSG combo it want be a problem. And since I will, ahem, have some modifications made to increas the ouput to 208Hp I would not risk the DSG.

Ok, but cheaper than a similarly equipped VW, then

I guess so,we couldn't be bothered to look at anything German. Overrated, overprised and 4 sheets of optional exquipment simply pisses me off.
I had a look at the Audi, BMW, Merc sites and even the most mundane equipment requires a hefty additional price. I'll be trading my car for something exciting next year and was thinking of Audi Q5/7, but I can't be bothered. I foresee something from Japan, France or Korea.

I've owned many cars over my young life, including a couple of Mercedes, but far and away the best car I've ever owned is the Lexus.

No "in-drive structural breakup within 18 months" post yet? Or would that be an in-wife structural breakup?

Cooperation between Skoda and German automotive industry goes long way back.

Concur. And I even had a good friend who was a Mercedes mechanic and it still damn near bankrupted me to repair it.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ~ WOW, what a ride~!!!

German cars are bankruptcy-on-wheels, post right-to-left-hand-drive conversion.

It's a bit like looking into the genealogy of a Tasmanian family.
Both the Superb & the Passat are built on the VAG PQ46 platform, though the PQ46 is an enlarged version of the PQ35 platform which covers a shitload of cars sold under 4 different brands ranging from the SEAT Leon to the Volkswagen Sharan.
To make matters worse, the current B7 Passat is an evolution of the previous B6 Passat which was built on a lengthened Mk5 Golf platform.
In a way, they're all Golfs!

I have a soft spot for the Octavia vRS wagon - which would be an entirely more suitable Moose transport device than current, but I might hold out for the F31 328i wagon as it's available a lot sooner than the next Octavia will be.

I recently gave some of my hard-earned money to Ford Motor Company by purchasing my second Ford Focus, this time an SE sedan with a 5-speed manual.
