The PROPER way to run an airline.

Postby 3WE » Sat Apr 14, 2018 3:09 pm

...and remember, lawyers have nothing to do with your modern business practices.

OK- total serious mode- no real message here- just a brief grin and interesting look at the olden days.

I think most of us miss loud, smoky low-bypass engines as much as more liberal seat pitches and meals.

I miss Concorde terribly, but none of the other stuff really.

Things I don't miss:
  • routinely sitting in a holding pattern for 15-20+ minutes upon arrival while awaiting a landing slot
  • the horrible headphones that ran on compressed air (?) or whatever it was
  • second-hand cigarette smoke everywhere
  • 70s government-issue airport decor
  • checking in at the main desk and then having to do it again at the gate to get a seat
  • standing in line for a payphone upon arrival to tell people you'd finally made it

LOL. There were a pair of regular electric speakers in your armrest, inside the holes where you connected the "pneumatic headphones". The plastic tubes just guided the sound from the speakers to your ears.Very much as if your child is speaking in the opening of a hose while you hold the other end to your ear. But yes, sound is compression waves travelling in the air so I guess that "compressed air" is not totally wrong (except that then any headphone qualifies as "compressed air" type).

Just another cast away from AD.com that reached AD.info island.

1996 - Olympic Air - was my last cigarette onboard an aeroplane. Although I note that Saudi appear to permit it to this day, perhaps only if you're wearing a thawb.....

I was never real clear on exactly what was going on there. From the sound quality you'd have thought that there was one set of speakers in the IFE electronics bay and tubes leading to all the seats. Although on reflection that might actually give better sound quality, given that then you could afford halfway-decent speakers.

anyway I was probably 10 the last time I thought about it

Was offered an upgrade AF, Business to First, LAX -CDG, '95. Asked if could smoke there, answer no. Thanks, but no thanks.
Ten mins later, "Mr. Bertelsen, it's OK, you may smoke in our First, you will be the only one there."
Happy days.
