Ozark 809, 50-year anniversary.

Postby 3WE » Mon Jul 24, 2023 5:21 pm

This crash occurred in Flyover when I was 13, and for several reasons, it's strongly etched in my mind.

We are now at the 50-year anniversary.

I've mentioned it many times on this board, but cannot find a dedicated thread.

It was an early windshear/downburst type of crash when we didn't really know a whole lot about the phenomenon.

A nasty storm was approaching. A 727 ahead of Ozark went around when it encountered some significant airspeed fluctuations and turbulence.

The rain shaft was part way across the runway.

Slightly similar to Delta 191, the weather bureau had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the good citizens, but that specific information was not conveyed to flight crews.

The pilots were on the ILS, but also had sight of the runway.

But suddenly, ~2.5 miles short and slightly left of the runway, they hit trees in a subdivision.

According to the final report, the pilots had few memories of the actual altitude loss and crash.

Today, I learned that a college classmate lost a great aunt and uncle on the plane.

A few years ago, I learned that flyboy had received training from the copilot of this plane.

(The two previous items further keep this crash on my mind).
