That's a tricky one. The headline says "Pilots eject from plane before it crashes..." but could also have said "Pilots eject from plane, causing it to crash...".

That's not tricky, that's stupid. What's the alternative? Pilots eject after they crash - burn - did dieded?

To me, the tone of the article seemed to be that ejection was not necessary, as the plane wasn't in that much distress. As in, if they had not ejected, neither the airplane nor its occupants would have did_died.

More than the tone of the article, that's what the pilot said. He was not ready to eject and he was still troubleshooting.
And the guy in the rear seat said that he may be the one who initiated the ejection while he doesn't remember actually doing it.

As in, if they had not ejected, neither the airplane nor its occupants would have did_died.
I know. But it worded in a typical news-media style (that is, horribly).

Once you said "pilots ejected from plane", adding "before it crashes" after that adds as much information as "while the Earth was orbiting the Sun".

There's no such thing as a premature ejection. As soon as one is unlucky enough to find oneself onboard an aeroplanie, ejection should be executed ASAP.
Once you said "pilots ejected from plane", adding "before it crashes" after that adds as much information as "while the Earth was orbiting the Sun".
But then we wouldn't know if the aeroplanie crashed, landed itself automagically, kept on flying indefinitely, was pulverized by a meteor shower, vanished, is American conspiracy, etc...
