More Braking-Related Crashes

Postby 3WE » Wed Apr 03, 2024 2:09 pm

In this case, a new spoiler system for a 172.

While I tire of speakists, this was weird enough to be interesting.

…and not tooooooo long :-)

I saw that one... talk about a need for a TOPMS...

Kidding aside, I remember in flight training more than once my instructor basically saying not to freak out if a door pops open... "An open door is not an emergency". Well, if you open it and tie it to the strut maybe...

The Tomahawk manual specifically says that if a door opens in flight will float about 1 to 2 inches open and slightly reduce airspeed or climb rate.
1- So 2 things: A 100 fpm reduction from 500 fpm is not the same than a 100 fpm reduction from 100 fpm.
2- A door that opens in flight and floats 1 or 2 inches open is not the same as a door intentionally stuck 100% open.

What was the pilot thinking?
What were the passengers thinking? I would have thought that most people would see that a barn door facing the windstream may be a bit too much drag.
Oh and by the way... what was the investigator thinking? He didn't consider that the door tied to the strut in the 100% open position may contribute to the slow acceleration and inability to climb?

Reminds me of the pilot that had to transport a ladder se he tied it along the wing.

I used to run my Toyota Rav 4 up to about 100 and shove the door open. I was mildly disappointed in the braking.

But I do not_infer that a 172 door and a bit heavy and 7000 feet of ‘altitude’ and 10 degrees of flaps eats a lot of the 0-320s effective HP…

Boeing would love that.
