Postby GerryW » Sun May 10, 2009 11:49 am

Accident: Lufthansa A321 near Geneva on May 9th 2009, turbulence injures 14
By Simon Hradecky, created Sunday, May 10th 2009 05:08Z, last updated Sunday, May 10th 2009 05:08Z

A Lufthansa Airbus A321-100, registration D-AIRS performing flight LH-4544 from Munich (Germany) to Lisbon (Portugal) with 147 passengers, was enroute with meal service in progress about 45 minutes into the flight, when the aircraft was hit by clear air turbulence without any warning causing injuries to 12 passengers, most of which were not strapped in, and 2 cabin crew. The flight crew decided to divert to Geneva (Switzerland), where the airplane landed safely.

9 ambulances and emergency doctors provided treatment to the injured, 5 people needed to be brought to a hospital, two of them on stretchers.

A replacement Airbus A321-100 registration D-AIRF was dispatched to Geneva and resumed the flight reaching Lisbon with a delay of 5 hours.

doesn't LH tell the pax to keep seat belts on for the whole flight?

More importantly, do the pax do it?

I'm sure they do, but do passengers listen? Very wise, especially above large mountains like, lets say, the swiss alps which happen to be on the route from Munchen to Geneva/Lisbon...

as far as I know from our flights with LH, they ask you to remain seated and wear the safety belts. But like you both mentioned, a lot of people don't listen. I wear the belts always.

Per, there are actually people out there who will secure the seatbelt whenever seated. I have the habit of always doing so (when I have to go to the rest room I must unbuckle, of course). But in the seat, whether in the car or on an aircraft, seatbelt is always fastened.

I don't. I go to the bathroom right there in my seat. Is this too much information?

Negative. CAT can hit at any time. Safety first.

No need, still plenty left. Might reconsider at later stage.

No can do, chief. Having one's manhood flail about the cabin, unconstrained by the trusty zipper, smashing holes in the interior paneling, and pummeling one's fellow pax about the face and head during CAT, would be untoward to say the least, as well as very poor in-flight courtesy. Zipped all the way. Again, was that too much information?

And please note that my practice of strictly adhering to safe seat belt usage has resulted in me being banned from several airlines and a couple of charter outfits.

Same here.

My guess anybody with a flight log will be doing so.

I find the alternative approach of a bradawl, some careful foam removal and the judicious positioning of a gaffa-taped sickbag results in an in-seat commode; perfectly suited to capturing the foul, pestilent stench of my bowel-effluent mid-journey.

What we need now is a Derf who could supply us with a photoshop of an aircraft cabin equipped with rows upon rows of toilet seats, complete with toilet seat-belts.
