Another comment suggested that it was bad technique.

Re: Beaver buys the farm
Was it just turbulence, or was it the pilot's incompetence when he had to handfly the plane in "direct law"?
Where is Carlos when we need him? (as a matter of fact, I happen to know where he is - he's getting clobbered in the German forum and needs all his resources over there)

I have not the slightest idea about water planes (not that this would stop me), but one of the comments stated that the pilot put the airplane on the "heels" of the floats instead of the "toes", thus slowing down the plane andit never made T/O speed.
Besides that, the videographer was REALLY brave to stay right there ...

That’s what I thought too after watching the video. It seem like he never got it “on step”. It increases the drag plus the water suction makes it harder to get the plane airborne.I have not the slightest idea about water planes (not that this would stop me), but one of the comments stated that the pilot put the airplane on the "heels" of the floats instead of the "toes", thus slowing down the plane andit never made T/O speed.

I would think he pulled the yoke into his stomach and held it there from the moment he opened the throttle.
It's fairly obvious that he was stalled when he finally lifted off.

I've taken pictures from the same spot. If he headed 20 degrees right the waterway is about twice as long. But plowing you can't see where you're going in a Beaver.
You're not a Freight Dawg unless you've shot the ILS to 23L at KYIP in a transport category aircraft no longer used in passenger service. You're OG if it had a tailwheel or BMEP gauges.
