With NTSB investigating, there'll be zero information disclosed outside of their periodic briefings. In a photograph in the article linked below (scroll down the page to see) the train was moving from left to right - the derailment occurred at or near a siding switch. The fact that the front portion of the train (not shown in this image) is upright and in line, suggests the likely cause will be a mechanical failure on the train (such as a broken wheel) or a track defect that failed as the train was rolling by. The track is required to be visually inspected twice a week; this was last done two days before the derailment.

I like that it allows you to cross after wrecking your car.

Can someone please explain the presence of this ridiculous thread in a premium aviation forum that has absolutely nothing to do with Squid?

Do you have definitive factual evidence that squids are not involved in these railroad-related anomalies?

I didn't think so.

Wind shear ahead…Go Around!

Postby 3WE » Sun Mar 13, 2022 1:16 pm

Mild ironing: Railroads dealing with wind somewhat as aviation does…

I’m thinking of videos of trains blowing through semi trucks….oh no…a headwind.

I also doubt that crosswinds are a major concern.

Then again 300 10 by 15 flat surfaces perpendicular to the wind is some drag (with “drafting” and wake turbulence acknowledged).

Turning downwind likely does reduce airspeed.

Finally- are we really gonna stop the train because of a headwind?

Maybe the engineer can tune in nearby ASOS frequencies?

Interesting…

As an outsider ass hat parlour talker, I THOUGHT there were requirements to set hand brakes on stopped trains…or maybe not…

A fair bit of Swiss cheese, that the brake system must have frozen enough to prevent repressurizing and then reapplying the brakes.

I think we should redesign brake systems with two air lines…one to keep reservoirs changed and the other to control the brakes.

Ban ALL gaps

Postby Not_Karl » Sun Aug 28, 2022 6:32 am

This is our local equivalent to the famous "mind the gap": cuidado con el espacio entre el tren y el andén, "beware the space between the train and the platform". I'm Not_El Experto on warning signs, but I find it excessively long and impractical. We should find something shorter and catchier.

Make a Warning Sign Department, put me in charge of it, assign me copious amounts of money and, in a couple of years, I may come up with something like ¡No metas la pata!

(For Los No Hablantes del Idioma Español: meter la pata, literally "to put the foot in", means to screw it up).

There, I fixed it. The danger is obvious, no text needed. The final version could use a neater crop.

US Railroad employees are threatening a strike.

The scheduling/dispatching situation seems insane, that workers have extremely limited ability to schedule off time…on the call for work, including many of those shifting sleep situations…It seems that airlines and hospitals can figure it out.

There has been a recent increase in “3-mile” trains, which saves on labor, but screws up passing sidings and makes breakdowns more cumbersome.

Perhaps train crews are paid too much….making management almost vengeful in their scheduling and work rules. I’ve seen engines with engineer, conductor and brakeman- where normal duties are speed up, slow down and liberal stop and wait. The brakeman does have work for set outs and brake hose failures.
