...breaking news, Harrison Ford injured in a plane crash.

Always liked his acting because he seemed so normal, human and vulnerable- even as the defy-all-odds Indiana Jones

http://news.yahoo.com/actor-harrison-fo ... 37620.html
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Harrison Ford was injured on Thursday in the crash of a small airplane outside Los Angeles, celebrity website TMZ reported.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the report on TMZ, which said that Ford, 72, suffered multiple gashes to his head and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

"We can confirm that there was a plane crash and the male occupant was a 65-70 years old man. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition," Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Officer Nuria Vanegas said.

"The incident was reported at 2:25 p.m., it was mechanical failure of plane, that's what caused the accident," Vanegas said.

Ford, best known for his roles in such blockbuster films as Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, is a longtime aviation enthusiast.

This is Mr Ford's third aviation incident. In the first he severely damaged a helicopter during autorotation practice. In the second, he dinged up a wing during a landing in bad weather. The third is yesterday's

Once is bad luck. Twice is a coincidence. Three times is a pattern.

Counting as 'strike three' a very survivable off-airport landing after engine failure in an urban area is a little harsh, unless it turns out the failure was related to fuel mismanagement / inadequate preflight etc.

I don't know anything about Ford's airmanship, but I do kinda admire the fact that (despite the fact he could easily afford them) he seems to enjoy flying relatively conservative, safe GA airplanes rather than the ex-Eastern Bloc jets or 1000hp+ warbirds some of the uber-rich play with.

P.S. Are DL now at the 'coincidence' stage for failing to put fully-functional MD-88s on LGA RWY13? :D

Interesting- and just furthering the discussion/ thinking out loud.

Those articles that say that light-plane flying is ~3? times more dangerous than driving are sobering.

...and on average, a driver is in a car crash every 10 years...Maybe Han just has the $$ to blow and flight time * accident rate = 3 for him?

It's often said, "but if you remove the really stupid crashes, it's really a lot safer".

Great, but then you also have to remove driving drunk between 10 PM and 2 AM from car crashes...and I think you wind up back at that ~3X factor.

Of course, given that Dummy is constantly practicing his flying for real (and paid to do it), and then goes and practices it more on simulators (and paid to do it?), and devotes most of his life to flying vs. Ford where it's just a hobby...and then we have that age factor kicking in...

Please remind the weak-minded of how DL entered the "bad luck" stage.

Don't ask stupid questions. ;)

As folks usually do, he pulled up relentlessly, lost speed, and then wound up coasting backwards into the ground.

Hhmmm... No dragging in the dirt "behind" the millennium. Therefore, I can assume it was flying "backward", toward the photographer.

Maybe he was pissed off that the photographer was trying to take a picture of the livery and decided to throw it in reverse and make a run at him?

It did not drag, it bounced. You can clearly see the craters it left  .

MmmmOkay. However it bounced like a rabbit (3 hops left and right), pretty sneaky - and - I can see that no squid were molested during the shooting.

(I like that)

"La FAA llevó a cabo una investigación completa sobre el asunto, incluida una entrevista con el señor Ford, y determinó que no se justificaba ninguna acción administrativa o coercitiva. El señor Ford mantiene su certificado de piloto sin restricción. Al cerrar el caso, la agencia reconoció el largo historial de Ford en su cumplimiento de las regulaciones federales de aviación y su actitud de cooperación durante la investigación."
and pasting that in to Google Translate we get:
The FAA carried out a full investigation into the matter, including an interview with Mr. Ford, and determined that no administrative or coercive action was warranted. Mr. Ford maintains his pilot certificate without restriction. By closing the case, the agency acknowledged Ford's long track record of complying with federal aviation regulations and its cooperative attitude during the investigation.
From reading Aviation Typists over the years, the FAA seemed to be most often painted as a heartless, certificate-suspending bunch for all sorts of minor incidents.

A new day? Or as Evan suggests, special movie-star treatment for our beloved Indy/Han/Jack Ryan/El Presidente generico, who recently lost a once-hot, younger girlfriend.

PS- If the FAA calls for no punishment, we the public certainly must make up for it by attacking Mr. Ford as Brian perceives.

This is Mr Ford's fourth aviation incident. In the first he severely damaged a helicopter during autorotation practice. In the second, he dinged up a wing during a landing in bad weather. The third is [the golf course crash. The fourth is the wrong-runway landing].

Once is bad luck. Twice is a coincidence. Three times is a pattern. Four times is a consistent pattern.

Fixed.

That "someone" I quoted was Mr Ford's lawyer as (likely translated and) quoted by an Argentinian newspaper.

On 3/6/2015 Dummy pilot originally posted approximately this verbiage, but with the word third more emphasized....On April 5, 2017, 3BS grossly plagerized Dummy's genius post inserting the word "forth" here and there and maybe a clarifying sentence:

This is Mr Ford's fourth aviation incident. In the first he severely damaged a helicopter during autorotation practice. In the second, he dinged up a wing during a landing in bad weather. The third is [the golf course crash. The fourth is the wrong-runway landing].

Let me again plagarize Dummy's genius:
This is Mr Ford's fifth aviation incident. In the first he severely damaged a helicopter during autorotation practice. In the second, he dinged up a wing during a landing in bad weather. The third is the golf course crash. The fourth is the wrong-runway landing and the fifth is the runway crossing incident.

Once is bad luck. Twice is a coincidence. Three times is a pattern. Four times is a consistent pattern. Five times is (running out of descriptors)

There's almost a trend for improvement...

Crash ==> Landing on a taxiway ==> Taxiing across a runway without clearance.
