JetPhoto Pre-Screening Thread...

Re: JetPhoto Pre-Screening Thread...
Ah I get it now... I didn't notice the film itself had a timestamp that was more detailed than the Youtube one.
We do already have a thread here about how baby planes are made... or do you think that's the guy's foot?
Kidding aside, either that guy is the world's greatest cowboy improviser, or they had a lot fewer rules back in the day. I particularly like the bit where he plays chicken with a cargo ship...

Forget "that guy". I am talking about the other guy.Ah I get it now... I didn't notice the film itself had a timestamp that was more detailed than the Youtube one.

I was particularly impressed with all the external "go-pro" style shots which back then meant that there was a person hanging on the wing or tail of the plane with a huge cinema camera. And the foot confirms that.
Or as one of the comments in YouTube says:
"Amazing how well that plane can fly, considering the mass of the cameraman’s balls"

I didn't know there was so much structural junk around the center engine intake.

So you're saying traveling on those was "Electra-flying"?I have few memories of Electras after the 1960s.

Pun noted. So you're saying traveling on those was "Electra-flying"?I have few memories of Electras after the 1960s.
Factually, my rugrat face was plastered to the flyover terminal window, drooling on it and watching a few connies, electras, DC-8s, 707+/- and maybe a DC-3…window perving, waiting for grandma 3BS, and marveling at the flying machines. I did ride a 727 around 1970. I was disturbed at how the front of the wings fell off and the roar of the skidding tires as all of the PSI went to the brakes.
Ozark kept FH-227s well into the 1970s.

Re: JetPhoto Pre-Screening Thread...
My understanding is they had extra pilots in the cockpit on those planes in case the regular pilots both suddenly realized what an ugly airplane they were flying and decided to quit on the spot.

A 5 person crew is 2.5x more prone to relentlessly pull-up, monkey with CBs, shut-down the wrong engine and commit other acts of cowboyism, improvisation and general tomfoolery than a 2 person crew.

Not a jet, not a photo, not even real... but still a gorgeous aircraft.

There was in fact some reason they called them that. Can't remember what it was though, and I'm feeling too lazy to go dig around. But, maybe not_a Whisperjet

-Some genuine modifications to the engine exhaust.
-Placement of a hard metal tab on the flap control lever limiting flaps to 30 degrees (vs. 50) and thereby reducing power requirements and noise when landing.
Mathematically less noise? Yes
Meaningful reduction? Shoulder shrug
Whisper? Bullcrap!
Edit: Took a quick trip to Google & Wiki and found an air-vane mixer thingie as part of the hush kit.

Re: JetPhoto Pre-Screening Thread...
Regarding the 5-man B377 crew, navigators were used up until the early 1960's - they even used sextants that would poke through a small hole in the roof of the cockpit. So that addresses one person. I believe some longer-distance flights also had a second officer. So there you go.
