I was fascinated to read this report today indicating that the US have been passing Military Intelligence to the Ukrainians about the whereabouts of Russian generals in order to drive tactical strikes.
I find this stuff fascinating.
Could I get some speculation (serious thread please) about the approaches they take to get this kind of intel?
- Eavesdropping
- Paid moles / informers
- Compromised military networks
- ???
Thanks

I don't know what means the US is using, but I remember, earlier in the war, news attributing some Ukrainian victories on Russian communications being easily intercepted because they were using non encrypted radio and cellphones. I ASSume that is Not_always the case, of course, especially after the publication of said news (if they were true to begin with).

Yes. There was a report in the Guardian that the intercept had taken place with one officer complaining that the Russian encrypted system was not working correctly.I don't know what means the US is using, but I remember, earlier in the war, news attributing some Ukrainian victories on Russian communications being easily intercepted because they were using non encrypted radio and cellphones. The New York times article comments are interesting, (if unverifiable) as is the Reddit thread. Some of the speculation includes:
- The use of iPhone and Android tracking to link the handset to a known individual and target them via their personal device (!)
This is a fascinating concept but would require a huge amount of intelligence to make it work, however given the handset is a locator beacon of the finest order this is a very interesting idea indeed.
- The use of micro drones to surveil and target specific "high value" individuals

There's a lot more Milo Minderbinders in the upper echelons of the Russian army then we ever imaged .
