Raw radio navigation

Postby Gabriel » Mon Aug 09, 2021 5:43 pm

Flyboy, is it possible in modern planes with FMS or the like (Garmin G1000 in GA airplanes) to just tune a VOR, ADF or ILS frequency without needing to go to an airport or waypoint page and select from there? I mean just input a frequency punching the numbers directly or rotating some knob, old style.

When I was in Arg last month I was playing MSFS with my brother and nephew and I couldn't do it. If I wanted to fly a full IFR approach I could not just select the airport's VOR on NAV2 and the ILS in NAV1, I had to go to the airport page, select what procedure I wanted to follow (which was a problem since I didn't have the charts), and let the system select the radios by itself, and then for the outbound leg it selected GPS waypoints (magenta line), only when capturing the ILS it transitioned automatically to NAV1 (green HSI). It really bothered me not having a NAV1 box where I could just input 121.5 and that's it.

Well, I don't know about the G1000, but for us it's certainly possible. Pretty easy, in fact.

TBM, 747-8.

With the C-152 I had no issues though :)

I've flown the TBM a little and it's a little awkward but you definitely can manually tune the radios on that one. Here someone explains it 10 times better than I could: https://youtu.be/XQI157LMdyE

That's useful, thank you!

I was frustrated because I could only tune the COM nd XPNDR in the NAV/COM page, I didn't think of hitting the "radios" button in the COM panel to access the NAV part.

Yeah, I find the radio setup in that plane to be rather unintuitive. Then again, I consider the radios shown here to be intuitive, which apparently makes me a dinosaur:

TBM, 747-8.
Holy type-specific model…

Not JUST the Socata TBM-700

But the TBM-747…

…dash 8

2. NOT_to be confused with the Boeing 747-800
3. Turboprop singles are cool, but cue the 1 vs. 2?engine safety trade off and cost discussion.

It's the little-known version of the -700 that can carry 410 people. Not bought by many customers because it has climb performance issues when fully loaded.

Does the FMS support carrier autoland? What about torpedo release?

(while we're talking about confusing type names)

I'm going to stop joking about how many people you can cram onto an airplane now: https://www.cnn.com/videos/world/2021/0 ... ot-vpx.cnn
