Hey guess what?

Aviators sit in the shade of their weatherbeaten, fabric-covered biplanes, exchange hangar talk and tell stories of their barnstorming days before they take to the air again and fly toward the setting sun ....

A Tarom 707 in the color scheme preceding the one in the photo was the second 707 I ever saw live. This was at SVO in 1986. The first was a VC-137C that brought a delegation of US Senators to TBS in 1983.

Am I the only one that, when I think about "early jet airliners that changed the world", I tend to think of the 707 way more than the DC-8? Yeah they built more of them, but it's not like they only built 5 or 10 DC-8s.

Maybe it's from watching the movie "Airport" so many times...

I think you are correct- we[no italics] think more about the 707- but not exclusively.

I'm sure Airport is an influence.

Also, I think the 707 did died a slower death. Rode one in the Early 1980s :) !

My fuzzy 1960's memories include a fair number of DC-8's and I THINK I knew how to ID them for some of 8-10 YO days.

I also recall a cargo DC-8s visiting Flyover...perhaps still visiting flyover?

Perhaps one belonged to Zantop airlines???

Bottom line- the DC-8 is ALSO a very beautiful LOUD NOISY 4-engine aeroplanie that we[no italics] love and miss.

Brief search at YouTube...

Nice video, including noise:

Upon further review- it is the HUGE ASS leading edge devices on the 707 which make it "the winner".

Wow. WOW! JT3C engines on that thing, not even JT3Ds!

I contend those engines should not actually be classified as engines, but musical instruments. And also as works of art (bonus points for no ugly noise-suppression thingys dangling off the back).
