Here's a twist: the article mentions "wood splinters" in the cabin... a lot of it looks like fiberglass (insulation) to me, but there is something that looks an awful lot like a mangled wood propeller blade. But Wikipedia says the Jetstream 41 has metal propellers (as you'd expect on a plane of that type and age)?

Concur, don’t think that’s a propellor.
I am; however, shocked at the apparent use of bio-carbon composite material in the J-41.

According to people in the Herald comments who claim to know what they are talking about, it seems that there is an STC for "natural composite" propellers that have a wooden core and an FGRP shell which save quite a bit of weight compared to the standard metal propellers that come with the Jetstream and are not so pricy like the foam core / carbon composite shell alternative.

Sounds good, but I'm not sure saving weight by having the blades depart the hub in flight is the best approach.According to people in the Herald comments who claim to know what they are talking about, it seems that there is an STC for "natural composite" propellers that have a wooden core and an FGRP shell which save quite a bit of weight compared to the standard metal propellers that come with the Jetstream and are not so pricy like the foam core / carbon composite shell alternative.

That doesn't save weight, it just shifts weight from the engine to the cabin and from the bowels to the underwear.Sounds good, but I'm not sure saving weight by having the blades depart the hub in flight is the best approach.
