Apple ipad
Looks like a nifty little device and an alternate to a laptop, not launched here in Australia until March, is anyone elsewhere planning to buy on and can offer some thoughts on how it rates for those looking to buy one down the track?

Looks like an overgrown iTouch to me.
As Stephen Colbert has said, they shouldn't have called it the iPad
They should have called it the "TamPod"

Re: Apple ipad
The iPAd won't be launched in other countries much earlier than March (if at all earlier). IIRC Apple said that shipments to stores would only start in MArch.

Re: Apple ipad
As it seems the iPad is restricted much like the iPhone with regards to programs running in the background, thus severely limiting multitasking, I will pass on this one. And stick to Linux on notebooks, or a tablet, next time I have the money to replace the laptop. Or maybe a small device that will run Android.

It has an ARM processor, doesn't look very promising...

Sincere condolences to all Norwegians! I guess you will need some aquevit to get over this.
Re: Apple ipad
I honestly only see one potential advantage on that thing and that would be iBooks. In general books here are about triple the price of what they are in the US, so that might be worthwhile....
Other than that I don't know what I should do with a blown-up iPhone without phone.... or make that an iPod touch.

Re: Apple ipad
If book-reading is the main idea for getting a tablet computer of any kind, I think I would go for a dedicated e-book reader, like the specs of the DR1000SW from irex

Books are for reading, phones are for talking, cameras are for taking pictures. If I want one gadget to do it all I'll let you know.

I couldn't agree more, Per, but I do like the idea of bringing a stack of books along in one sleek package. While studying I had to read a bit from each of a number of bulky books, it would have been nice to just have the one eBook and not have to drag along 5 books of 1000 pages each. And then there is the amount of paper that could be saved on that account.

Books are more flexible and useful in more than one way. In '95 I bought "Millenium - A History of the last thousand years" by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto. A hundreds of pages tomb and a great read. Traveling SAS economy HKK - CPH it also came in handy since my short legsI couldn't agree more, Per, but I do like the idea of bringing a stack of books along in one sleek package. True, but I haven't had to resort to that type of problem solving with books before, except for using telephone books as seat boosters for kids. But I wouldn't like to use my books as foot rests, makes it damn hard to read them at the same time

I recline my seat for sleeping, not good reading while you sleep. Too much Cognac also inhibits my ability to comprehend "Millennium", not the easiest read.True, but I haven't had to resort to that type of problem solving with books before, except for using telephone books as seat boosters for kids. Hmmm, skiing without skis is not easy, but we do have the snow for it, for once, coldest January in 23 years, more snow to be dumped on us tomorrow.
Since the girls of the family are not much inclined to go having fun in the snow, I think we might make it a summer visit. Also economy must be able to bear it, what with all the duty free rations we have to pack into the little Skoda

Re: Apple ipad
No multitasking, no Flash support, no camera, no real operating system (just iphone OS), 16GB of storage (hell, my touch is 32gb), cheap processor, no flexibility (iphone OS, Apple app store, etc.), and it doesn't even fit in your pocket. I don't see a single reason to get this if you already have an ipod touch or an iphone. And if you want a netbook or a tablet, there are many cheaper and much better options. If you want an ebook reader, get a Kindle--you won't be limited to what's available from Apple's store. The only people who are going to buy this product are the ones who fit this picture:

I do get some satisfaction out of the fact that Apple stock dropped about $20 (around 10%) after the public unveiling of the imaxipad...
