Not when there isn't any on board.
Why not?
Doesn't a bag ever get lost even before reaching the plane in the first place?
Why would it get lost between check in and the aircraft??

Why would it get lost between check in and the aircraft??
How many terminals and/or concourses are there at your airport?

I see. Now, let me offer for your perusal the schematic of the Atlanta airport.

The check-in areas are at the main entrance at the far West end of the airport. From there you've got four concourses with 36 gates each, one with 34 and one with 15. That's a total of 193 gates with the E concourse being nearly two miles from the check in area.

Now do you see maybe a few places a bag could get lost between the check-in area and an airplane?

...the E concourse being nearly two miles from the check in area...
Asshat, the runways are about 2 miles long and the terminals sit squarely within the runway length with a big chunk of that realestate devoted to maintenance and other facilities. In fact the length from the front door to the far end of the East concourse is more like 1.3 miles.

But don't let logical reasoning get in the way of your thought process....kind of like nose high, slow speed and stall warning but whatever the hell you do don't even think about lowering the nose, the book says not to.

And 3BS misses the point again, just like about "stall-speeds etc". What are you going to tell me next, dumbass, that a bag can't get lost in 1.3 miles but can in 2?

Go play second fiddle to Gabe on jp.net.

They may well get lost in Atlanta, no doubt, my brothers bag missed its connection in Auckland only two weeks ago.

Why would it get lost between check in and the aircraft??
For the same reason that it would get lost between the aircraft and baggage claim? Or are you going to tell me that bags never get lost in direct flights?

I'm pretty sure it's on the Before Pushback checklist to make sure at least one person's luggage goes through HNL.
Except if destination is HNL, of course

I find that hard to believe. Theres only 16 gates all under one roof.

Well, in my case, apparently the plane had left Memphis the night before running behind schedule and got into the New York area after LaGuardia's summertime late night curfew and landed at JFK.

The funny thing was that I was going to brief the whole approach while on the ground at Kennedy, but the last couple times I did this I found that you have to fly way out of the NY departure area just to get established on an actual STAR back inbound so I told the F/O we'd have plenty of time (the last one I did we went all the way to southern New Jersey just to get back on the KORRY). I was surprised as hell when we took off and got cleared direct to DIALS for the Expressway Visual. It was asses and elbows after that.
Were you on standby, or were you supposed to fly it out of LGA so they taxi'd you to JFK to start your day?

They shouldnt bag is checked in bag put on correct flight barrow/s taken to correct aircraft loaded on correct aircraft bag count is given to dispatcher he confirms it against the amount of bags checked in if its the right amount all bags are accounted for, aircraft departs.

Ah yes, that famous "shouldn't" term. Just in the process you describe I see five failure points that may result on a bag going on the wrong aircraft and/or missing. I'm not saying it happens deliberately, but mistakes do happen.

I was checkiing two bags on a United flight from Houston to Denver. I told the lady at the counter that I wanted one bag to go to San Diego and the other bag to go to Chicago.

"We can't possible do that!" she exclaimed.

"Why not? You did it last time."
