Pretty sure that the malfunction was caused by the magnets in the motors of the personal devices, Not_by them being on.
That said, the usage of those devices in the cockpit could lead to fatal distraction.
I wonder if turning them ALL on would lead to vibration induced overstress of the airframe and in-flight break-up.

I always loved this type of magnetic compass. I remember being envious when I saw them installed in the R-22s and I had the ole style whisky compass. I wonder why that's not the ONLY type of magnetic compass being installed in airplanes.

Oh, yes, I forgot. This thread was about masturbating devices. Putting the magnetic flux sensor under the baggage compartment area seems a quite reasonable design decision. I had a class in college that was flight and navigation instruments. Back then the magenta line reserved only for )back then) new gen of expensive transport category or business jets, but there was that thing (used in things from Baron category and up) called HSI (horizontal situation indicator) which was a "mix" between the gyro compass and a VOR and another thing called RMI (radio magnetic indicator) which was a mix between a gyro compass and an ADF. One thing about these instruments was that the compass disk lacked the drift adjustment knob of the normal gyro compass. The reason for that was that the correction was automatic based on an Earth's magnetic flux detector (and sometimes there was no gyro at all, the indication came directly from such detector). I remember quite clear that the text book we used said that the magnetic flux detector is normally placed on the wing or tail to have it far away from magnetic and electromagnetic sources in the cockpit.
