Delta flight forced to turn around because of diarrhea incident

By Maureen O'Hare and David Williams, CNN
Published 2:01 PM EDT, Tue September 5, 2023

A Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Barcelona on Friday night was forced to turn around after a passenger had diarrhea.

The Airbus A350 had set out on time on the evening of September 1 with 336 passengers on board, but was forced to turn around over central Virginia.

“It’s just a biohazard issue, we had a passenger who had diarrhea all the way through the airplane so they want us to come back to Atlanta,” a DL 194 pilot said to air traffic control.

The Airbus 350 arrived back at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport slightly more than two hours after its departure, according to FlightAware.

Delta told CNN that the flight was delayed just over eight hours, but landed in Barcelona without further incident on Saturday at 5.16 p.m. local time. “Our teams worked as quickly and safely as possible to get our customers to their final destination,” a spokesperson said. “We sincerely apologize to our customers for the delay and inconvenience to their travel plans.”

It’s not the first flight this summer to have the passenger experience disrupted by bodily fluids. This week Air Canada issued an apology after two passengers were told to sit in inadequately cleaned seats that had been covered in vomit on a previous flight.

The incident happened on a flight between Las Vegas to Montreal on August 26.

And on June 30, a traveler on an Air France flight from Paris to Toronto found his seat’s footwell still wet with a a previous passenger’s blood and diarrhea.

Habib Battah told CNN that he noticed a strange smell, “like manure,” but when he alerted a flight attendant he was handed wet wipes and had to clean the area himself, before being offered blankets from business class to soak up the waste. “We had to sit there smelling the blood for the next seven hours,” he told CNN.

And try to mitigate with face-diapers the result of the lack of butt-diapers?

It's not pleasant. I've been on planes with people being sick, I once sat next to a woman who bled into her seat, thankfully never had anyone die on me.

EasyJet flight canceled due to ‘defecation’ incident
By Francesca Street, CNN
Published 11:50 AM EDT, Tue October 17, 2023

An easyJet flight was canceled and its passengers made to disembark after someone onboard the aircraft apparently defecated on the airplane bathroom floor.

The flight on Sunday evening from the Spanish island of Tenerife to London Gatwick had already been delayed by several hours.

Aaran Gedhu, a passenger on board, told CNN Travel the flight had already run into trouble pre-departure when the scheduled plane was switched out for a smaller aircraft, meaning some customers were turned away at boarding.

Those who made it on board, two hours after the scheduled departure, then had to wait on the ground for more than an hour while bags were offloaded due to the aircraft being overweight.

As the delay extended, the atmosphere on the packed flight was characterized by “suspense and anger,” Gedhu said.

“EasyJet planes, as they are, just aren’t very comfortable – it’s just a basic seat with okayish legroom room. So everyone was just a bit tense,” he said.

“Then, the pilot finally gave the all clear, and then he said that it will be about 20 minutes until departure,” recalled Gedhu.

“And that’s when the incident happened with the defecation.”

Gedhu said he was seated in the middle of the aircraft, but saw “two passengers” visit the front airplane bathroom. Then, word spread that someone had defecated on the bathroom floor. An unpleasant smell followed.

No one was happy about this situation, said Gedhu, but he says most believed the incident was an “accident.”

“Everyone was being polite to each other. There was no fighting amongst the passengers,” he said.

“It was just a very uncomfortable experience. Obviously, the plane was in an unsanitary state. So they had to get external cleaners out from the airport to clean it. So that’s when the stairs reconnected, and the cleaners came on to deep clean the flooring.”

According to Gedhu, passengers remained in their seats during the cleaning process. Afterward, the captain of the aircraft told the plane’s occupants they would have to disembark in an announcement captured on video by another passenger, Kitty Streek, who shared the video on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“It was very frustrating,” Streek told CNN Travel. “We obviously can’t prove whether the person simply had an accident or if they had done this out of anger for the delayed flight but it was hard not to be angry either way as nobody wants to be stranded in another country.”

It was another 30 minutes before passengers deplaned, according to Gedhu. He said he was put up in a hotel overnight – around 45 minutes drive from the airport – before boarding a specially scheduled “rescue” flight the following day.

EasyJet confirmed the initial delays on flight EZY8054 on October 15 occurred due to “safety reasons.”

“Some bags were offloaded to be carried on the next available flight for safety reasons, due to the aircraft being overweight,” it said in a statement.

“The flight was subsequently delayed overnight due to the aircraft requiring additional cleaning,” the statement continues. “We provided hotel accommodation for all customers however as there was limited nearby hotel availability in the area we also advised any customers who booked their own that they will be reimbursed.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority and while this was outside of our control we would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.”

Sunday’s flight cancellation follows several recent disruptive incidents involving bodily fluids on board airplanes.

In September, a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Barcelona was forced to turn around after a passenger had diarrhea. Earlier that month, Air Canada issued an apology after two passengers who were told to sit in seats that hadn’t been cleaned properly after being covered in vomit during an earlier flight.

CNN Travel has also reported on an incident on board an Air France flight from Paris to Toronto in which a passenger discovered potentially toxic blood and feces left over from an incident from a previous flight under his seat.

Ban ALL bodily fluids.
That is indeed an effective way to resolve ALL the issues of humanity, not just accidental bodily fluids discharges.

‘Biohazard’ prompts United Airlines flight diversion

By Pete Muntean, CNN
Updated 11:49 PM EDT, Mon July 29, 2024

A “biohazard” on a United Airlines flight is the latest midair incident to trigger an unplanned, early landing of a commercial plane.

United Airlines says one passenger’s “medical issue” caused flight 2477 to land in Virginia, where the plane had to be “deep cleaned.” FlightAware shows the flight departing Houston on Sunday morning, then diverting to Washington Dulles International Airport about two hours into the trip. The flight was bound for Boston Logan International Airport.

Audio posted on X by Thenewarea51 captured a flight crew member describing a “biohazard” on board the flight.

“It sounds like it’s quite bad back there,” the recording captured. “The crew is vomiting and passengers all around are asking for masks.”

In a statement, United says “we deep cleaned the aircraft and it departed for Boston later that afternoon.”

This is the latest gross incident on board a commercial flight.

Earlier this month, a Delta flight diverted to New York when spoiled food made passengers sick. In April, a United flight had to return to San Francisco when a toilet began overflowing.

American Airlines flight to Madrid diverted after bathroom overflows
Business Insider 08/09/2024

* An American Airlines flight diverted to New York on Wednesday following an "overflowing lavatory," per the FAA. * The airline apologized for the disruption and passengers continued their journey on Thursday.

* It's the latest flight to be disrupted by a bathroom malfunction this year.

An American Airlines flight diverted to New York after crew members discovered problems with the bathrooms.

American Airlines flight 36 was en route from Dallas Fort Worth Airport to Madrid on Wednesday when the issue was discovered, according to the FAA. The aircraft landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York at about 10:30 p.m.

The FAA said the crew "reported an overflowing lavatory" and would now investigate the incident.

An American Airlines spokesperson told Business Insider: "On August 7, American Airlines flight 36 with service from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Madrid (MAD) diverted to New York (JFK) due to a maintenance issue.

The aircraft landed normally and passengers continued their journey on another plane on Thursday, the representative added. "We never want to disrupt our customers' travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience."

It's understood that the issue involved the aircraft's bathroom sinks and that passengers were given hotel accommodation in New York.

It's not the first time this year that aircraft bathroom problems have caused disruptions. In March, a United Airlines flight from Germany to San Francisco was forced to turn around after one of its toilets reportedly malfunctioned and started leaking into the cabin.

In February, a KLM Boeing 787 Dreamliner heading to Los Angeles returned to Amsterdam after eight of the nine bathrooms stopped working.

Airlines including American are still recovering from the widespread disruption caused by the Crowdstrike IT outage late last month.
