Well done, Brad. You are one of us now.

What happens now is this. Your resume, along with those of all the other interns that IDS hired for that area, gets passed around to the first line managers. They all say, "I'm not looking to place any interns, but thanks anyway." Then the staffing people come back and say, "Someone has to take these interns, because we have made formal offers to them, and if we can't place them by their start dates then we have to retract their offers and all legal hell will break loose and the Obama administration will respond by pulling all our military contracts." Then the first lines ask their managers, "I don't have budget for any additional headcount, but can I add one intern?" And he says, "Go ahead, but remember that overrunning your budget will result in a poor year end performance review for you. I'm sorry. Hey, check out my new Blackberry!"

Doesn't it feel good to be loved?

This is a copy&paste from a Dilbert comic, or is it really meant serious?

Very good to know, that "leadership, teaming and communication" is the key, while engineering knowledge is only required on basic level. There goes the aviation industry, until Chinese engineers do the job and let us have the thrill of leading our process enabled managers with excellent communication and leadership into a glorious team of process enhancement consultants. In 2016 Boeing will require Microsoft to deliver the MS Office with PowerPoint alone.

Yes, except I never actually use it myself. I make my office assistant do all that technical stuff.

Today was the big day!!! Well, the semi-big day. I closed out my apartment at Purdue, sent the pup home to stay with the parents for the summer, and got on the road. 285 mile drive, but only took about 4 hours. My first stop was the Boeing complex, where I drove around for 15 minutes trying to figure out where my building was. Finally found it, then moved on to find a motel to stay in until I find an apartment. Now I'm sitting here in this cheap motel without so much as a pool or a nearby bar and my best source of entertainment (other than the free internet and the tv) is my scanner with STL approach tuned in. I need to go into Boeing Wednesday morning for two hours for some orientation dealio and paperwork, and I start Friday morning 7:30am.

Took a couple of pictures with the phone on the way over to alleviate the boredom of the four hour drive by myself, which I will now post on here to alleviate the boredom of being in the motel by myself and not knowing a single living person within 250 miles.

Southern Illinois looks like just Indiana and Ohio.

Side trip to Memphis? I think not.

Image

Toledo again? Am I going in a circle?

Image

And just when I thought the Bible Belt had converted to Satanism, this 100 foot cross proves me wrong.

Image

This one looks a little better...

Image

Image

The mighty Mississippi....

Image

And I made it to Missouri all by myself...

Now back to the solitude.............. :(

Yeah, I'd really like to go in and start tomorrow, but I guess I can settle for the joys of apartment-searching instead.

Just south of the Poplar Street Bridge you crossed is the Merchant's Bridge. When I lived in the area durng / after college it was still open to highway traffic on a deck above the railroad tracks. One could walk out there and sneak down a ladder to the railroad deck and watch the July 4 fireworks shooting up over the river adjacent to the arch.

Here are a couple of notable St. Louis Traditions

Anheuser Busch Tour - now owned by In Bev - I used to be amused that the Clydsdales enjoyed better llving conditions than I did in my slum apartment

River Road Trip - great for motorcycles.

The Bimbo truck is from Gruppo Bimbo who make most of the bread eaten in the US.

Now go make a widget, or sell a widget, or teach someone how to use a widget or whatever it is you'er going to do. At least you're being paid to be in aviation.
You're not a Freight Dawg unless you've shot the ILS to 23L at KYIP in a transport category aircraft no longer used in passenger service. You're OG if it had a tailwheel or BMEP gauges.

Went to The Boeing Store today. Looked around for half an hour. They have some neat stuff in there. Also drove around downtown and saw the Arch. Pretty impressive.

Found two other interns who were looking for a third roommate in a nice house near Washington University. It's about 15 miles to Boeing, but this is much better than anything I would have found up there. Very nice, old neighborhood. Looks like most of the houses were built in the 1910s and 1920s and are valued between $250,000 and $400,000. Pretty upscale living for three guys in college!

Orientation is tomorrow morning. Most excitement I've had yet this week.

In that case, may I suggest using a bicycle. Very good for you it is. You'll arrive fresh and with a cleared brain ready to sponge up knowledge.

If he were to try that in St. Louis, he'd more likely arrive as fresh road-meat with his brain clearly exposed like a sponge and the knowledge that he may never walk again.

Hmm, doesn't sound neither very safe nor very civilized. Where is this place St. Lois? Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Laos....umm no, biking is safe there. Where then?

Yeah I'm going to have to side with Halfie on this one. That's 15 miles via Interstate highways, where bicycles are not allowed. If I tried to do it on city roads it would be much farther and yes I would be dead. City drivers in America are not very courteous to cyclists and many city drivers think cyclists are nothing more than speed bumps that move about 15 mph.

And not to mention the dew point hasn't dropped below 20 degrees since I've been here and at 8:50am the temperature was already 26 degrees. I need to arrive fresh and ready to work, not sweaty and exhausted. Traffic at 7:00 this morning really wasn't bad at all once I got on the interstate.
