BREAKING: American Airlines Flight 6469, an Embraer 175, had just departed Omaha’s Eppley Airfield yesterday at 4:40 pm local time en route to Los Angeles International.
Approximately 15 minutes after departure, the crew heard banging on the cockpit door. They tried to contact the cabin crew using the intercom but could not reach them. There was only static.
Understandably thinking that someone was trying to break into the cockpit, the crew of AA6469 declared an emergency and immediately turned back for Eppley Airfield. Flight 6469 made a hasty approach, landed heavy and as it rolled to a stop upon the very same runway they had just departed, the aircraft was quickly surrounded by police and security vehicles.
The Captain then made an announcement to the passengers, "We weren't sure if something was going on with the airplane, so that's why we're coming back here," the captain said. "It's gonna be a little bit.
“We have to figure out what's going on.”
It was soon discovered that after departure, one of the cabin crew tried to contact the flight crew and discovered the intercom was not functioning. They then tried to advise the Captain and First Officer by banging on the cockpit door to gain their attention.
They were successful in gaining the flight crew's attention, that's for darn sure…
